چکیده

We establish tight bounds for beacon-based coverage problems, and improve the bounds for beacon-based routing problems in simple rectilinear polygons. Specifically, we show that bn6 c beacons are always sufficient and sometimes necessary to cover a simple rectilinear polygon P with n vertices. We also prove tight bounds for the case where P is monotone, and we present an optimal linear-time algorithm that computes the beacon-based kernel of P . For the routing problem, we show that b 3n−4 8 c − 1 beacons are always sufficient, and d n 4 e − 1 beacons are sometimes necessary to route between all pairs of points in P .

Combinatorics of Beacon Routing and Coverage

We consider combinatorial problems motivated by sensor networks for beacon-based point-to-point routing and covering. A beacon b is a point that can be activated to effect a ‘magnetic pull’ toward itself everywhere in a polygonal domain P . The routing problem asks how many beacons are required to route between any pair of points in a polygonal domain P . In simple polygons with n vertices we s...

A Combinatorial Bound for Beacon-based Routing in Orthogonal Polygons

Beacon attraction is a movement system whereby a robot (modeled as a point in 2D) moves in a free space so as to always locally minimize its Euclidean distance to an activated beacon (also a point). This results in the robot moving directly towards the beacon when it can, and otherwise sliding along the edge of an obstacle. When a robot can reach the activated beacon by this method, we say that...

Routing in a Polygonal Terrain with the Shortest Beacon Watchtower

In a paper by Biro et al. [2], a novel twist on guarding in art galleries, motivated by geographical greedy routing in sensor networks, is introduced. A beacon is a point that when activated induces a force of attraction, or repulsion that can move points within the environment. The effect of a beacon is similar to standard visibility with some additional properties. The effects of a beacon are...

Competitive Exploration of Rectilinear Polygons

Exploring a polygon with robots when the robots do not have knowledge of the surroundings can be viewed as an online problem. Typical for online problems is that decisions must be made based on past events without complete information about the future. In our case the robots do not have complete information about the environment. Competitive analysis can be used to measure the performance of me...

Linear-Time Algorithms for Rectilinear Hole-free Proportional Contact Representations

A proportional contact representation of a planar graph is one where each vertex is represented by a simple polygon with area proportional to a given weight and adjacencies between polygons represent edges between the corresponding pairs of vertices. In this paper we study proportional contact representations that use only rectilinear polygons and contain no unused area or hole. There is an alg...
